MOOC on Surface wave methods for site characterization

An open-access, streamlined MOOC within the project Edvance @ POliTO that introduces surface-wave methods for estimating shear-wave velocity profiles, a key parameter in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Shear-wave velocity controls seismic wave propagation, site amplification, and the results of site response analyses and microzonation studies.
Participants will learn the physical basis of Rayleigh wave dispersion, how field data are acquired using active and passive techniques, and how dispersion curves are processed and inverted to obtain subsurface stiffness profiles. The course emphasizes engineering interpretation, including investigation depth, resolution limits, and uncertainty. Designed for graduate students and professionals, it provides both theoretical foundations and practical guidance for seismic site characterization.

The full set of video-lessons can be found on YouTube

For Italy, registered participants on Edvance portal will earn an Open Badge upon completion of the course (including quiz and exercises).
